The A.L.F.A 24 HP came on the market in 1910. This was the first automobile created by A.L.F.A (later Alfa Romeo). Giuseppe Merosi was the man behind engineering. The car was used for the first time in car racing in the 1911 Targa Florio. This was first commercial success for the company and the timeline of the HP series tells that the car was continuously developed onwards. The 24HP had a 4,082 cc (249.1 cu in) straight-4 sidevalve engine, which produced 42 bhp (31 kW) with 2200 rpm and gave top speed of over 100 kilometres per hour (62 mph).[3] Until 1913 approximately 200 A.L.F.A 24 HPs were built.
The engine designation consisting of a number as well as “HP” came from the then usual designation of tax schedules. The 24HP became the starting point of a whole series of vehicles, which were built until 1921 and included:
- 12HP , 2413 cc straight-4 and 22 bhp (16 kW), (1910–1911)
- 15HP , 2413 cc straight-4 and 25 bhp (19 kW), (1912–1913)
- 40-60 HP , 6082 cc straight-4 and 70 bhp (52 kW), (1913–1914)
- 15-20 HP , 2413 cc straight-4 and 28 bhp (21 kW), (1914–1915)
- 20-30 HP , 4082 cc straight-4 and 49 bhp (37 kW), (1914–1920)
- 20-30 ES Sport , 4250 cc straight-4 and 67 bhp (50 kW), (1921)
A.L.F.A 15 HP
One of Alfa Romeo’s first models was the ’24 HP’. Built entirely by Alfa Romeo, the new line of vehicles was assembled at the Portello district in Milan and was fitted with 4.1L engine delivering 42 or 45 hp. The vehicle had a gross weight of 870 to 1000 kg and reached a maximum speed of 110 km/h. It was designed by Giuseppe Merosi and debuted in the Targa Florio race (1911). More than 200 units of the 24 HP were produced between 1910 and 1913.

A.L.F.A. 24 HP 1910 – The birth of Alfa Romeo
In 1910, a company known as A.L.F.A. (Anonima Lombarda Fabbrica di Automobili) was established in Portello, where it was arose from the ashes of the defunct Societa Italiana Automobili Darracq. The image chosen for the new firm’s trade mark had a decidedly Milanese flavour: a red cross on a white field with the Visconti dragon on one side.
The newcomer got started with a 300-(off production run. This was the “24 HP”, designed by Giuseppe Merosi, which had 4084 cm3 four cylinder monobloc side valve (L head) engine. Later entrepreneur Nicola Romeo took over the company and his name became linked to cars rolling of the Portello lines. This was the beiginning of Alfa Romeo’s brand.

Alfa Romeo Automobiles S.p.A in Italian “alpha romɛːo” is the Italian car manufacturer. Established as A.L.F.A. on June 24, 1910 in Milan. the company has participated in motorsports since 1911 and has built a reputation for building top-class sports car. The company was founded by the Italian state holding company “Istituto per la Ricostruzione” owned industries since the year 1932-1986, when it became part of the Fiat group and since February 2007, part of Fiat Group Automobiles S.p.A.
Alfa Romeo company as Societa Anonima Italiana Darracq (SAID) in 1906, founded by Alexandre Darracq French car company, with some Italian investors. In late 1909, Italian Darracq cars sold slowly and formed a new company called ALFA (Anonima Lombarda Fabbrica Automobili, in English: Lombard Automobile Factory, Public Company) initially in partnership with Darracq. In 1920 the name of Alfa Romeo with the Torpedo 20-30 hp as the first car badged as they change.
In 1928 Nicola Romeo left, with Alfa broke after defense contracts ended, and in late 1932 Alfa Romeo Benito Mussolini’s government, controlled and stored effectively. Alfa factory struggling back to profitability after the Second World War and turned to mass production of small cars, not a hand-built luxury models. The company, which was developed in 1954 the classic Alfa Romeo Twin Cam engine that will remain in production until 1995. During the 1960s and the 1970s produced a series of Alfa Romeo sports cars, although the government fought the Italian parent company, Finmeccanica, to make a profit, so the brand of the Fiat Group were sold in 1986 to make it.
Alfa Romeo has competed successfully in various categories of motorsport, including the Grand Prix motor racing, Formula One, sports cars, touring cars and rally. They have both competed as a constructor and engine supplier, via works entries (usually under the name Alfa Corse or Delta) and personal notes. The first race car built in 1913, three years after founding the company, and Alfa Romeo won the first world championship for Grand Prix cars in 1925.

In August 1915 the company came under the direction of Naples entrepreneur Nicola Romeo, who converted the factory to produce military hardware for the Italian and Allied war effort. Munitions, aircraft engines and other components, compressors and generators based on the company’s existing car engines are manufactured in a factory to expand dramatically during the war. In 1923 Vittorio Jano was away from Fiat, partly thanks to the persuasion of a young driver named Alfa Enzo Ferrari, to replace Merosi as chief designer at Alfa Romeo. The first Alfa Romeo under Jano was the P2 Grand Prix car Alfa Romeo won the first World Championship Grand Prix car in 1925. For road cars Jano developed a series Alfa small, medium-displacement 4 6 and 8 cylinder inline power plants based on the P2 unit that established the classic architecture of Alfa engines, with light alloy construction, hemispherical combustion chamber, located in the center wall, two rows lining the valve per cylinder bank and dual overhead cams. Jano design proven both reliable and robust.
Enzo Ferrari proved to be a better team manager than driver, and when it privatized the factory team, then became Scuderia Ferrari. When leaving Alfa Romeo Ferrari, he continued to build his own car. Tazio Nuvolari often drove for Alfa, winning many races before World War II.

In 1928 Nicola Romeo left, with Alfa broke after defense contracts ended, and in late 1932 Alfa Romeo was rescued by the government, which then had effective control.
