In mid 2011, BMW unveiled the 1-Series Sport and Urban Line models, both of which featured five-door configurations. But what about a three-door version? Well, that will be available too, only we’ll have to wait until sometime during the summer of 2012.
A few leaked patent designs revealed that the three-door version of the 1-Series line will feature a pulled back B-pillar, angled towards the rear of the vehicle, and the absence of rear doors. An arcing roof combined with an arcing side glass will give the impression of a shooting brake model.
As far as power goes, the new 1-Series three door model will have an engine lineup similar to that of the five-door version: a 1.6 liter four-cylinder in-line engine delivering either 136 or 170 HP and a 2.0-liter four-cylinder in-line diesel with either 116, 143, or 184 HP.
BMW has announced today the special editions 1-Series Exclusive and Sport Editions available for both coupe and convertible versions. The Exclusive Edition will be distinguished by window cavity covers and side frame strips in Chrome Line or the optional BMW Individual high-gloss Shadow Line. The model can be ordered with a range of light alloy wheels available in 16, 17 and 18-inch sizes.
The model can be ordered in an exclusive Mineral Grey metallic paint combined with exterior mirrors in Oxide Silver matte finish and the exhaust covers and longitudinal kidney grille bars in chrome. The interior gets seats finished in Pearl Grey with grey contrast stitching or in black with white contrast stitching. BMW is offering different aluminum insertions or an optional fine wood finish Fineline Anthracite, an anthracite-colored BMW Individual roof liner for the 1 Series Coupe and floor mats with welt in matching color.
The new Sport edition gets a M Sports chassis, M aerodynamic package, a Carbon Black metallic paint combined with 17 or 18″ M light alloy wheels in double spoke design. The interior gets sports seats, a M leather steering wheel, stainless steel pedals and M footrest in aluminum. The seats covers and trim doors are available in a fabric/Sensatec combination Flashpoint Black with contrast stitching in blue, interior strips in aluminum glacier silver and matching floor mats with blue welt.
The new 1 Series 3-door model has an athletic appearance with its short overhangs as well as long bonnet and wheelbase. Complemented by a strong front end and elegant frameless windows, this car makes a contemporary yet sporty statement.
While you enjoy the driving, technology from BMW’s EfficientDynamics programme gets to work. Brake Energy Regeneration ensures the battery is charged from energy lost while braking or coasting, creating a 3% saving on fuel consumption and emission levels compared to the previous model. This system works alongside the Intelligent Alternator Control, which disengages the alternator when the battery does not require charging. This further reduces fuel consumption and emissions by lessening drag on the engine.
Meanwhile, the Auto Start/Stop mechanism switches off the engine when the car is stationary and in neutral. The engine the re-starts simply by depressing the clutch pedal. As a result, emissions are reduced further and you enjoy better fuel economy.
The Optimum Gearshift Indicator also improves things by telling you the right gear to select to derive maximum efficiency. Plus, the new Electric Power Steering system delivers assistance only when needed, feeing up engine power and maximising efficiency.
Adding to the 3-door’s spirited performance is the 50:50 distribution of weight between front and rear axles that balances handling and comfort.
Finally, optional Active Steering adjusts the steering weight and ratio to suit your speed. Consequently, responses are more agile on twisting roads, you have greater directional stability when cruising at speed and parking takes less effort.
