Automotive writers being as…humbly accommodated as we are, it’s sometimes bittersweet to report on the billionaire’s playthings we’re only allowed to sample, at best, for an afternoon or two—that is, when we aren’t, at worst, drooling over desktop wallpapers and spec sheets. So then, there is some solace in knowing that this week’s toy, the Ferrari 599XX Evoluzione, won’t be spending much time in its owners’ hands, either.

That’s because the Evoluzione is the latest in Ferrari’s XX program, wherein their most loyal and lucrative customers are given the privilege of paying for this track-only technology testbed, a harder, better, and faster version of the already-bonkers 599. No, the 599XX isn’t road-legal, nor is it even track-ready without the aid of a team of Ferrari mechanics armed with laptops. Buyers of the original 599XX got, for their $1.75 million, the car along with six Ferrari-sponsored track test days. And now, for an additional $250,000—that is, about the price of a new Ferrari 458—existing owners will now receive another six track days, along with a host of upgrades. It’s the upgrades, of course, that make this such a bargain.

There’s all the usual engineering tweaks—changes to the suspension, a bump in power to 730 horses—but the crux of this new package is the active rear wing, similar to the Drag Reduction System (DRS) technology that is currently changing the game in Formula One. It features two flaps which rotate automatically, based on telemetry of the car’s speed, steering angle, lateral acceleration, and more, in order to raise or lower the amount of downforce on the rear wheels—and, more incredibly, the front wheels as well. The result is yet another step toward the holy grail of perfect traction and handling, yet again derived from the billion-dollar R&D department that is F1 racing; look for similar features on more everyman conveyances…a couple decades from now.

And that’s all well and good for your aftermarket Honda Civic, but this is Ferrari we’re talking about. Younger readers may only revere them for Michael Schumacher, paddle shifts, and sub-four 60 mph times, but where Ferrari’s road cars originally made their name wasn’t between the stoplights, but on the winding roads of places like Cannes and Monaco. Legendary cars like the Ferrari Daytona (pictured) were posh grand tourers, for taking you and Sophia Loren from the casino to the marina. The 599 happens to be a front-engined V12 GT car, in the Daytona tradition. But is it as stylish, as effortlessly cool as its forbearer? It pains us to say it, but it seems hard to make that case.

For years, Ferrari has been transplanting its success in F1 into pavement-pounding technologies in its road cars, and that has altered the content of their underpinnings, and their skin-deep aesthetic. Features like carbon fiber trim on the dash and F1-style switches all over the steering wheel get our 12-year-old selves all up in a tizzy, but would guys like Marcello Mastroianni want launch control? Or a switch that puts the car in “race” mode?

Then again, times change, and maybe our increasingly technocratic lifestyles are desegregating pragmatism and style. After all, in a world where Ray Rice is a Call of Duty fanatic and Adrian Peterson enjoys the occasional game of Magic: The Gathering, even the most image-conscious are increasingly unashamed of our geeky predilections. And cars like the 599XX and its successors are a nod to that fact—digital cars for the Internet age. If that’s true, feel free to rock a techy parka over your suit, and adaptive aerodynamics on your ride. You’ll be warm and fast as hell, if nothing else.

To mark the end of production of its 599 GTB, Ferrari has built Evolution 599XX. Just like the Ferrari Enzo-based FXX supercar originally experimental has a more extreme FXX Evolution variants. provide constraints that are not limited to technology in the streets and highways for reinforcements, 599XX in Evolution trim now features improved chassis dynamics thanks to an active aerodynamics package integrated with the vehicle electronic systems’ control. These parameters are also integrated with other functions of car control (ESP, ABS, SCM and F1-Trac). As a result of this integration, all the control electronics are in accordance recalibrated and ultimately help improve cornering ability. This car has a much stronger character than previously capable menhghasilkan 740 horsepower thanks to new exhaust were added, plus the reduced weight also weighs 77 pounds and comes with a new set of super sticky Pirelli tires.
